Discursus/Narrazione 5
Site-specific light installation (cm 150 x 260)
2023
Discursus/Narrazione 5 is a site-specific work that shares with Embroidering Chaos the same poetic approach, inscribed within the framework of chaos and complexity theory. The thread that composes the images creates textures and patterns woven of light, and is constituted by a written text through which light filters selectively, generating reticular forms that recall natural structures.
Discourse as Interweaving
The title refers to the etymology of the word discursus, as highlighted by philosopher Carlo Sini, which links discourse to interweaving, entanglement, and the twisting and threading of signs and meanings. From this perspective, discourse is neither a straight line nor a univocal narrative, but a branching movement, a fabric of connections.
As Sini writes: “Each of us is a body constituted by an infinite interweaving of bodies in relation with other bodies, themselves infinitely intertwined.”
The Door and the Threshold
Discursus/Narrazione 5 explores the theme of the threshold. The door, a recurring element in the artist’s research, here directly references the architecture of the Mausoleum of Hadrian.
According to architect Paolo Vitti, a false door would have existed within the mausoleum, an apparent passageway, devoid of practical function yet charged with symbolic value.
This architectural detail reinforces the work’s conceptual dimension, making it a metaphor for passage, transit, and crossing. It creates a liminal space of encounter and connection between opposing polarities: life and death, past and present, subject and object, in a constant interplay.
The work was designed for the National Museum of Castel Sant’Angelo, where it was exhibited from 21 December 2023 to 16 February 2024, positioned at the end of the diametrical ramp. It is in synergy with the project Ricamando il Caos, presented during the same period at the Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum in Rome.
